How do I make my house feel like home?
Tuesday, April 12th, 2011Question by fadedoak: How do I make my house feel like home?
I am one of those ridiculously poor college kids, so the whole buying new things to make your house feel like someplace you want to call home is pretty much out of the question. A bit of back story, I am living in this small 500 sqft crappy student housing (they’re students, you don’t need to maintain the building…) Alas, Its too much space for me because I don’t have anything. Why don’t I have anything? because my crappy roommate was too busy with her life to move my stuff out of the flooding basement while I was gone for 2 months. So, everything I had in that house was destroyed. Gone. I have an inflatable bed, about 4 tables, a folding chair, and a whole bunch of saddles (since I work with horses). No couch, no tv, limited things on the walls, no storage of any kind (yep, clothes and books are everywhere in piles) I seriously need to figure out how to make this more than a roof over my head. It makes me depressed to see it. I have been living here since september, and only have until may to get through it. I couldn’t handle the huge empty room that was intended to be my bedroom, instead I moved to the loft which is intended to be storage.
I have nearly mastered the skill of dumpster diving, and going to the thrift store, and I am a highly creative individual. I just have no idea on how to make it feel like home.
Would a lay of the land help? The building itself is a hexagon, and there are 6 apts in the hexagon.
Its a strange place, you walk into the entry room (I think its intent is a living room) I have it set up as a kitchen table, and saddle stand area, one window. then its the kitchen which opens out to being the other room (intent on being the bedroom) that has my dysfunctional bike, and a closet, and has turned into a storage area of everything else, another window. I have a hall closet, which actually holds a tub full of camping gear, a bathroom. Then up a cast iron spiral staircase to the bedroom (thats intended to be storage) which has my bed, the dogs bed, a folding chair and a table.
